If a nursing mom eats a high fat diet, will that affect the fat content of her milk?
I realize that hind milk is richer in fats than foremilk, and that the milk changes in nutrients to match the baby’s needs, but I’m wondering if a mother gets a healthy dose of healthy fats (or conversely, saturated or trans fats), how much of it actually ends up in the milk?
According to Tom Hale, once you reach a certain level of saturation of fat, it makes no difference in the fat content of breast milk. In other words, a woman who has virtually no fat in her diet will have less fat in her milk until she consumes more fat. A woman who has adequate fat amounts will have no more fat in her milk from consuming even more quantities of fat, whatever the type.
A woman who has virtually no fat will cease to produce milk. Happens a lot in famine struck areas.
